Many families in Victoria struggle to afford textbooks or textbook hire programs, particularly given the increasing cost of living pressures. As such, many students do not receive a high standard quality of education they are entitled to. This is particularly damaging for students completing VCE, where many subjects require a textbook reference. The need for affordable or free textbooks is not currently adequately met, as the most common existing solutions involve online pirating or purchasing damaged or poor-condition textbooks. The proposed solution is an online platform which facilitates the publication of and access to “open textbooks” for VCE. An open textbook is licensed under an open licence, meaning it can be made available to everyone for no cost. The online and open nature of the textbooks would allow academics, experts and educators to contribute to the content of textbooks. This also ensures that textbooks remain always up-to-date. The solution would allow for pages of markdown files to be parsed and converted to HTML and PDF, as well as generating XML metadata for each textbook. The solution would allow users to create accounts, select their subjects, access all textbooks, and join teacher-created classes.
